Chacchoben was only known by the locals before 1972, when an American archaeologist reported the discovery of the ruins to the Mexican authorities. After excavations, the site was opened to the public in 2002. After your own exploration of the Chacchoben Ruins, end your day with lunch and drinks on a beautiful beach.

Chacchoben Ruins & Beach

The Chacchoben Mayan ruins are just a few kilometers from the village of Chacchoben and takes its name from this village. The translation of the Mayan word "Chacchoben" refers to "the place of the red corn." Only 50 minutes away from the port, this area is known for several species of reptiles and snakes as well as spider monkeys, jaguars and a large variety of birds.

This archaeological site has an area of over 170 acres and includes buildings and complexes of different sizes. The excavations did not begin until 1994 and were conducted by the National Institute of Anthropology and History. The main structures are dated between 200 and 700 AD, with signs of having been rebuilt several times. Chacchoben became a prosperous city, covering in particular the cultivation of maize. To date, excavations have been undertaken only on the five buildings that rest on the structure known as the great basement.

During this Costa Maya excursion learn for yourself the purpose of the temples. They are believed to have been part of the study of the stars and astronomy as well as being a place of worship. The top of the temples incorporates a structure that tracks the sun throughout the day.

Complete your Costa Maya excursion with a trip to a beautiful white sand beach with crystal clear turquoise waters and enjoy a nice moment under a palm tree or some time on a comfortable lounger in the sun accompanied by a delicious cocktail in hand listening to music. The restaurant bar offers all the facilities for your comfort; bar service on the beach, restaurant service on the beach, Mexican snacks and a delicious local dish. There are a variety of water sports from which you can choose to complement your time at the beach as well as free Wi-Fi.
